I remember the Ealing Club... it was dripping off the roof all the time, wasn't it? It was so wet that sometimes we had to put a thing up over the stage, a sort of horrible sheet which was revoltingly dirty, and we put it up over the bandstand and so the condensation didn't drip directly on you, it just dripped through the sheet on you, instead of directly off the ceiling... It was very dangerous too, you see, 'cause all this electricity and all these microphones and that... It was incredibly primitive, you know...

(H)aving seen the Stones once at the Marquee, the people who were running the scene in those days were 100% against us, and it was one bloody fight to get anywhere... I'll never forget the first time we went down to the Flamingo. We did an audition on a Sunday afternoon, and the Flamingo was a pretty smart place. It was THE modern jazz club in town, and everybody was going down in their zoot suits, white shirts, and all that. I'll never forget saying to Keith, You're not going to the Flamingo dressed like that are you? He said, What ho, Stu, I've only got one pair of fucking jeans!

I'd seen them at Colyer's (Studio 51) once, and it was about 3 months, the record had been released by the time I saw them again. The next time we went we begged the girl out the door to sell us tickets the day before. She let us have the tickets. The queue next day was fantastic. Colyer's is a long room with a very small stage at one end, low ceiling, you could touch the ceiling. We were in early, so we were at the front of the stage, but we were packed so tight that I was pushed up against the stage. People were standing, and sitting on people's shoulders. Every inch was packed. Sweat was pouring from the walls and the amps kept going wrong, but the music was fantastic, the boys were fantastic. I didn't actually faint because of them, I fainted because of the heat. And they just passed me over everyone's head into the tea room.
